My Mother The Angel

Growing up Under Communism – My Mother The Angel

My mother was a stay at home mom. She had me and three siblings to take care of. She enrolled in a fashion / seamstress school. She wanted to help by making some money as a tailor for women. The retail stores under communism had a very limited selection of women clothes and of very poor quality. Very soon, our house was full of women for dress fitting.

Many of her clients would bring a fashion magazine, point out a dress depicted on a page and asked my mother to create it exactly, and most of the time she did.

My mother’s business was not even legal. Small businesses like that had already been banned by the communist government. Within a year she was bringing in more money than my father, a university professor. My father had a lot of respect for her. They never quarreled, although the life was not simple. Whenever I visited with my mother, while I was away studying for my engineering degree, she always handed me a pile of cash, and Imean a pile, the equivalent of $500, just as pocket change.

One day everything stopped. One of her clients reported her to the authorities, and she had to close the shop. It was hast simple. She never made another dress for anybody again.

My mother wasn’t just talented and loving. She kept the family together and helped us kids overcome many problems while keeping a wonderful smile on her face and made everything so easy.
